A partnership between science and industry for a monitoring of anchovy & sardine in the Bay of Biscay: When fishermen are actors of science ArchiMer
Masse, Jacques; Sanchez, Florence; Delaunay, Damien; Robert, J. M.; Petitgas, Pierre.
Anchovy and sardine are small pelagic species occupying similar geographic areas in the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic). Their biomass is strongly dependent on recruitment, making the annual assessment of TAC (Total Allowable Catch) a risky strategy due to uncertainty in predicting the magnitude of recruitment. Monitoring these resources more often and throughout their life cycle could allow management strategies to be adjusted based on observations which indicate the level of recruitment. In order to achieve a more frequent monitoring, an innovative data collection strategy involving a partnership between fishermen and scientists, was developed in 2009 and 2010 called “pilot sentinel surveys”. This paper details the partnership, the information such a...

A restricted fishing area as a tool for fisheries management: Example of the Capbreton canyon, southern Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Sanchez, Florence; Morandeau, Gilles; Bru, Noelle; Lissardy, Muriel.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are generally considered as one of the most important tools, among the many regulations, designed to preserve marine resources as well as enhance fisheries. In the southern Bay of Biscay, local French fishermen requested creation of a restricted area to help settle disputes between the various métiers operating there. This restricted area, which lies mainly in French waters, covers part of a deep submarine canyon off the French and Spanish coasts, known to have a large population of mature hake. This study aims to better understand the effects of a restricted area upon French fleets operating there, particularly upon three main métiers – longliners, gillnetters and trawlers. The study area includes three ICES statistical...

Assessment of the impact of a wastewater treatment process including Advanced Oxidation Technique on environment using chemical and biological indicators ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Pigot, Thierry; Paulin, Thomas; Bru, Noëlle; Sanchez, Florence; Marticorena, Julien; Lanceleur, Laurent; Gonzalez, Patrice; Daffe, Guillemine.
In a context of several directives for transitional and coastal waters masses (Water Framework Directive, Marine Strategy Framework Directive and Bathing Water Directive), the good ecological status of water but also conservation of marine ecosystem should be quickly achieved. The Basque coastline (SE of the Bay of Biscay) is subject to strong human pressures with a high density of population over the year, and especially during the summer with tourist activities. It generates nutrient discharge, water and sediment pollution and impacts the quality of the marine environment. Such pressure and the way to reduce its impacts are the main concerns of authorities Locally, in order to improve wastewater treatment process, an alternative technical solution is...

Campagne d’évaluation du stock de palourdes du bassin d’Arcachon. Année 2018 ArchiMer
Sanchez, Florence; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Lissardy, Muriel.
This report details the results of clam stock assessment survey, which took place between 14 May and 17 June 2018 in Arcachon Bay. Co-organized with CDPMEM33, with financial support from DLAL FEAMP Arcachon Basin Val de l'Eyre, Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, the CDPMEM33 and Ifremer, the clam stock assessment and its characteristics were provided. The samples were collected from 533 sampling stations distributed over an area of 52 km², with an Hamon grab, using a generalized random tessellation stratified spatially balanced design (GRTS). Venerupis philippinarum remains the dominant species with 99 % of the population. The size distribution of Manila clam is in the range 5 – 41 mm with a main mode around 24-28 mm. In 2018, the mean densities are 39 individuals...

Data products for fish stocks and ecosystem assessment:the PELGAS survey example ArchiMer

The initial objective of the PELGAS integrated survey was to assess the biomass of small pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay in spring. Sampling has been extended to study the spatial structure and dynamics of the pelagic ecosystem in springtime. The PELGAS survey has produced since 2000 long-term time-series of spatially-explicit data and indices, describing the main pelagic ecosystem components: hydrology, phytoplankton, mesozooplankton, fish and megafauna. In addition to small pelagic fish biomass estimates used for fish stock assessment, the survey now delivers two types of ecosystem products: standard gridded maps of ecosystem parameters, and a time series dataset of indicators of the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem state. The evolution of the PELGAS...

Direct assessment of small pelagic fish by the PELGAS15 acoustic survey ArchiMer
Duhamel, Erwan; Doray, Mathieu; Huret, Martin; Sanchez, Florence; Authier, Matthieu; Bergot, Patricia.
The Pelgas15 acoustic survey has been carried out with globally good weather conditions (regular low wind, medium temperatures) for the whole area, from the South of the bay of Biscay to the west of Brittany. The help of commercial vessels (two pairs of pelagic trawlers and a single one) during 18 days provided about 130 valid identification hauls instead of about 50 before 2007 when Thalassa was alone to identify echotraces. Their participation increased the precision of identification of echoes and some double hauls permitted to confirm that results provided by the two types of vessels (R/V and Fishing boats) were comparable and usable for biomass estimate purposes. These commercial vessels participated to the PELGAS survey in a very good spirit of...

An acoustic survey (PELGAS) is carried out every year in the Bay of Biscay in spring onboard the French research vessel Thalassa. The objective of PELGAS survey is to study the abundance and distribution of pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay. The main target species are anchovy and sardine but they are considered in a multi-specific context and within an ecosystemic approach as they are located in the centre of pelagic ecosystem.
